The Investigator
Co-founder and Chief Executive of Perplexity, who can decide whether answers on the web arrive with their sources and whether publishers are paid for them.
He builds an answer engine and an AI browser, and has tied them to a revenue-sharing programme for the publishers whose content the answers draw on.
In 2025 Perplexity made its Comet browser free and launched Comet Plus, which shares 80 percent of subscription revenue with participating publishers, backed by a $42.5 million fund.
Market Status reads Aravind Srinivas as The Investigator. The friction this archetype resolves is that an answer which replaces the click also removes the traffic that used to pay the sources behind it.
He co-founded Perplexity on 22 August 2022 with Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski, after a year as a research scientist at OpenAI. Perplexity introduced Comet in July 2025 and made it free in October 2025. In late August 2026 Reuters, citing The Information, reported that Nvidia was in discussions to invest at a valuation above $30 billion.
At the launch of the free browser he said he hopes the move will help to build a better internet. He has said that becoming the default browser means infinite retention, and that native transactions are the way to pursue the revenue that search advertising captures today.
Dow Jones, the New York Post, Forbes and The New York Times have accused Perplexity of using their content without permission. He denies this and points to the licensing arrangement, and he has acknowledged rough edges while saying Perplexity aggregates and does not plagiarise. A secondary report also says researchers tricked the Comet browser into a phishing scam in minutes.
Against the journey, Srinivas is Building. The Attention Economy’s ad exchanges, attribution standards and impression metrics paid publishers when a person clicked, and an answer that replaces the click leaves those micro-containers with nothing to count. Comet Plus tries to replace the impression with a share of subscription revenue, and whether it holds depends on a record of which source supported which answer. His work helps introduce that attribution for the Marketing, Communications and Legal functions.
