The Philosopher
Co-founder and Chief Executive of Safe Superintelligence, who can set the research agenda for AI that has no product to sell until it is safe.
He builds a lab organised around a single goal, safe superintelligence, and argues that the next phase of progress needs research breakthroughs and not only scale.
Safe Superintelligence, founded in June 2024, was valued at $32 billion after raising more than $3 billion, and Sutskever has said its first product will be safe superintelligence.
Market Status reads Ilya Sutskever as The Philosopher. The friction this archetype resolves is the tension between the speed of commercial AI and the patience safety research needs.
He co-founded Safe Superintelligence Inc. in June 2024 with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy and now serves as chief executive. He was a co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI, where he co-led the Superalignment team. SSI is an American company with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.
His stated aim is to build safe superintelligence as the company’s first and only product, with safety insulated from short-term commercial pressure. He has said that by safe he means safe in the sense of nuclear safety and not in the sense of trust and safety.
He argued in November 2025 that the field is moving from scaling toward a phase that needs fundamental research, and he described current model generalisation as jagged and dramatically worse than people. In a deposition taken on 1 October 2025 in the Musk lawsuit against OpenAI, he said he had sent memos to OpenAI’s independent directors criticising Sam Altman’s leadership and had recommended his removal in 2023. Those statements are his testimony and are not findings.
Against the journey, Sutskever is Building. A company that will not ship a product until safety is solved is an unusual micro-container for the model layer: the promise is a safety result and not a service level. Market Status reads his work as setting the external reference the Technology, Legal and Risk Management functions will ask for before they trust any frontier system inside a workflow.
