Alexandr Wang

The Investigator

Short Summary

Chief AI Officer of Meta and founder of Scale AI, who can decide how the data layer and the model layer of a frontier lab work together.

The Perspective As a Builder

He moved from supplying the data that trains other labs’ models to leading Meta’s own frontier lab, so the data layer and the model layer now sit in one seat.

Impact

Named Chief AI Officer on 30 June 2025, when Meta Superintelligence Labs was formed, he leads a lab that reportedly launched the Muse Spark model family in April 2026.

The Archetype.

Market Status reads Alexandr Wang as The Investigator. The friction this archetype resolves is that the company that trains and grades the models for many labs has now been bought into one of them.

The Position.

He founded Scale AI in 2016 and led it until Meta invested $14.3 billion for a 49 percent non-voting stake in 2025, after which Jason Droege became interim chief executive. At Meta he leads Meta Superintelligence Labs, which houses the foundation models, products and the FAIR research team, plus a new lab for next-generation models.

The Interest.

His stated aim is personal superintelligence: AI systems that act as personalised digital extensions of an individual. He says the relationship should be mutual, with the AI actively working to help the person succeed, and that research and product teams should work in a continuous cycle and not through hand-offs.

The Tension.

Meta’s lab was reported in December 2025 to have fallen behind rivals, with several researchers who joined it having left, and Yann LeCun left Meta in November 2025 to found his own company. Wang also acknowledged in February 2026 that Meta’s smart glasses still ran an older version of the Llama model.

The Read.

Against the journey, Wang is Building. Scale AI’s data labelling and model benchmarks were an independent measuring instrument for many labs, which makes the independence of evaluation a gap now that its founder leads one of them. His seat joins the data layer, where the Data Economy’s micro-containers apply, to the model layer. Market Status reads that as a question for the Technology and Risk Management functions: who grades the model, and who is allowed to see the grade.
