It aired on ABC at 8 p.m. on Thursday 12 September 2024.
Her stated message was that life for all of us is about to be very different, and she told viewers that AI’s influence is inevitable. Before the broadcast she said she had had no encounter with AI until her first conversation with Altman, and she presented the special as a way to demystify the technology.
Technology commentators criticised her, weeks before the broadcast, for glamorising the industry through her choice of interviewees. One review said she asked tough questions, particularly of Altman, and another said her optimistic framing left out the possibility of superintelligent AI.
Against the journey, Winfrey is Accelerating, through cultural acceptance. The Creator Economy’s verification badges move trust from a person to a piece of content, and a primetime host does the same for the technologists she interviews.
