R&D and Innovation Working Record

See what can be built in research and development. Eight working records, each with a Container of Trust and a test.

This is the working record behind the eight shifts in R&D and innovation. Each shift carries an evidence class, a build split and a test, so a Container of Trust can be proved at small scale before a pipeline decides what gets tested.

What this record covers.

Each of the eight shifts below carries nine fields: potential outcome, enterprise context, Container of Trust, economic value, the Container Holder and service, evidence class, build now, build later and a validation test. You can compare the shifts side by side, or lift one record into a project brief.

The validation test names the smallest measurable step a builder can prove before committing capital. A shift that passes it can move from research to execution.

The eight shifts in full.

01

Hypothesis Selection Record

Evidence: emerging Build now Sold as Hypothesis-Selection-as-a-Service

A record of why one hypothesis was chosen from a hundred makes the real judgment visible.

Potential outcome

Each chosen hypothesis can show the criteria, the alternatives and the reviewer behind the choice.

Enterprise context

A lab chose its hypotheses by argument, and a hundred generated ones arrive without an argument.

Container of Trust

A record listing the criteria, scores, rejected alternatives and the person who made the call.

Economic value

Better use of lab time and a defensible research portfolio.

Likely Container Holder and Hypothesis-Selection-as-a-Service

A research management software vendor, a scientific consultancy, or a technology transfer office. The primary buyer is the head of R&D, funded from the R&D programme budget.

Build now

A selection record on one project's hypothesis round, with criteria agreed before generation and rejections logged.

Build later

A portfolio record that investors and funders can review, dependent on shared fields for rationale and criteria.

Validation test

Review the last ten selected hypotheses. If fewer than 70 percent have a written rationale from the selector, the record justifies the build.

02

Feasibility Record

Evidence: emerging Build now Sold as Feasibility-Review-as-a-Service

A record weighing novelty against feasibility keeps the most striking ideas from being chosen on novelty alone.

Potential outcome

Ideas can be scored on feasibility alongside novelty before they are chosen.

Enterprise context

Generated ideas were judged more novel but slightly weaker on feasibility, and novelty attracts attention first.

Container of Trust

A record scoring each idea on novelty and feasibility, with an expert review.

Economic value

Fewer costly experiments on ideas that cannot be built.

Likely Container Holder and Feasibility-Review-as-a-Service

An R&D analytics vendor, an engineering consultancy, or a research evaluation firm. The primary buyer is the head of research, funded from the R&D planning budget.

Build now

A two-score sheet on the top twenty ideas in one round, reviewed by an expert panel.

Build later

A benchmarked feasibility model trained on a lab's own history, dependent on enough completed projects to learn from.

Validation test

Score twenty past ideas on both measures. If the most novel quarter shows lower success rates, the record justifies the build.

03

Comprehension Record

Evidence: conditional Build now Sold as Comprehension-Check-as-a-Service

A record showing the researcher can explain the work checks that the tool did not leave them feeling informed without being so.

Potential outcome

A researcher can demonstrate understanding of the result a tool helped produce.

Enterprise context

A researcher who ran the experiment understood it, and AI tools can leave researchers feeling informed without being so.

Container of Trust

A record of explanation checks, reviewer questions and the researcher's answers.

Economic value

Fewer errors carried into later work and stronger peer review.

Likely Container Holder and Comprehension-Check-as-a-Service

A research integrity service, a scientific publishing platform, or a graduate training provider. The primary buyer is the head of research integrity, funded from the research governance budget.

Build now

A short oral and written check on each result that feeds a decision, run by a colleague in the same field.

Build later

A comprehension standard that journals and funders recognise, dependent on adoption by reviewers.

Validation test

Run checks on twenty results. If more than 20 percent of researchers cannot explain a key step, the record justifies the build.

04

Citation Verification Seal

Evidence: observed Build now Sold as Citation-Verification-as-a-Service

A seal showing every cited paper was matched to a real source restores the ground a literature review stands on.

Potential outcome

A literature review can show each cited paper was found and read.

Enterprise context

A literature review once cited papers the author had read, and generated text can assert what no source supports.

Container of Trust

A seal listing each citation, the source matched and the claim it supports.

Economic value

Lower risk of building on a claim no source supports.

Likely Container Holder and Citation-Verification-as-a-Service

A scholarly database provider, a reference management vendor, or a research integrity firm. The primary buyer is the head of research operations, funded from the research infrastructure budget.

Build now

An automated match of every citation in internal reviews against a scholarly database, with non-matches flagged.

Build later

A claim-level check showing each source supports the stated claim, dependent on full-text access and reliable claim matching.

Validation test

Check 300 citations in generated reviews. If more than 3 percent are invented or misattributed, the seal justifies the build.

05

Inventorship Declaration

Evidence: observed Build now Sold as Inventorship-Declaration-as-a-Service

A declaration naming the people who conceived each invention, and the tools they used, answers where patent law now places the line.

Potential outcome

Each invention can carry a declaration of the natural persons who conceived it and the tools used.

Enterprise context

A patent names the person who conceived the invention, and current guidance treats AI as a tool and not as an inventor.

Container of Trust

A declaration recording the conceivers, their contribution and the tools used.

Economic value

Lower risk of invalid patents and stronger ownership claims.

Likely Container Holder and Inventorship-Declaration-as-a-Service

An intellectual property management vendor, a patent law firm, or a technology transfer platform. The primary buyer is the chief intellectual property counsel, funded from the IP legal budget.

Build now

A declaration form completed at invention disclosure, capturing who conceived what and which tools helped.

Build later

A cross-jurisdiction record aligned to each patent office's rules, dependent on convergence in national guidance.

Validation test

Review ten recent disclosures. If more than 30 percent leave conception unclear, the declaration justifies the build.

06

Idea Lineage Log

Evidence: emerging Build now Sold as Idea-Lineage-as-a-Service

A log of how an idea moved from generation to result keeps the chain from idea to outcome in view.

Potential outcome

A result can be traced back through each step, tool and person to the original idea.

Enterprise context

A lab notebook recorded who did what, and a pipeline scored by AI records what the pipeline chose.

Container of Trust

A log recording each stage, tool, version, person and decision from idea to result.

Economic value

Faster audits and stronger evidence for patents and publications.

Likely Container Holder and Idea-Lineage-as-a-Service

An electronic lab notebook vendor, a research data platform, or a research governance consultancy. The primary buyer is the head of R&D operations, funded from the research systems budget.

Build now

A lineage log for one project, recording the origin of each hypothesis and each major decision.

Build later

A portable lineage record that follows a project across partners, dependent on shared formats between systems.

Validation test

Trace five past successful results back to their origin. If more than two cannot be traced in a day, the log justifies the build.

07

Scoring Calibration Record

Evidence: conditional Build now Sold as Scoring-Calibration-as-a-Service

A record comparing pipeline scores with experimental outcomes shows where a scoring tool can be relied on and where it cannot.

Potential outcome

A scoring tool can show how well its scores predicted real results.

Enterprise context

Pipeline scoring invites deference, and the person scoring may not know which problems fall outside the tool's strengths.

Container of Trust

A record pairing each score with the later result and the problem type.

Economic value

Better use of scores and earlier warning where a tool is weak.

Likely Container Holder and Scoring-Calibration-as-a-Service

A machine learning evaluation vendor, an R&D analytics firm, or a research consultancy. The primary buyer is the head of R&D analytics, funded from the R&D data budget.

Build now

A calibration table for one scoring tool, comparing scores with results by problem type each quarter.

Build later

A shared calibration benchmark by problem type, dependent on firms sharing anonymised results.

Validation test

Compare scores with outcomes on 100 past ideas. If the top-scored decile does no better than average, the record justifies the build.

08

Experiment Authorship Record

Evidence: emerging Build later Sold as Experiment-Authorship-as-a-Service

A record of who designed, ran and interpreted each experiment keeps credit and accountability with people.

Potential outcome

Each experiment can show who designed it, ran it and interpreted the result.

Enterprise context

A researcher who ran the experiment understood it, and an automated pipeline can run steps nobody supervised.

Container of Trust

A record listing design, execution and interpretation roles with names and tools.

Economic value

Clearer accountability and fewer disputes over credit.

Likely Container Holder and Experiment-Authorship-as-a-Service

A laboratory automation vendor, a research data platform, or a research integrity office. The primary buyer is the head of research operations, funded from the lab operations budget.

Build now

A roles field on each experiment record in one lab, completed at sign-off.

Build later

A portable authorship record accepted by journals and funders, dependent on publisher adoption.

Validation test

Review 30 experiment records. If more than 15 percent leave a role unnamed, the record justifies the build.

Compare the eight.

Before you spend a dollar.

Each shift earns the right to become a project. Seven questions help a builder decide where to begin.

  1. Confirm the need exists. Interview practitioners, buyers and budget owners to collect baseline costs and incident examples.
  2. Confirm the enterprise context. Identify the operational gap, the cost of the workaround and what happens if the gap stays open.
  3. Test the smallest Container of Trust. Start with a manual checklist or a simple register before building a platform.
  4. Measure total economics. Count labour, software, training, integration and ongoing review effort.
  5. Identify the buyer and the budget. Confirm that a named budget holder exists and that a current alternative has a price.
  6. Test trust as well as usability. Check that the people who rely on the record understand it, can challenge it and choose to use it.
  7. Choose the next status honestly. Record each shift as a hypothesis, a validated model or a rejected path.

The Market Records connection.

The patent grant naming an inventor, the signed laboratory notebook and the peer review that tested a claim each tied discovery to a person and to evidence. They let investors and courts rely on work they did not see being done.

Every economic era built Containers of Trust to turn its abundance into economic value. These eight shifts apply the same pattern to research and development, and the precedent informs the question while the test settles the answer.
